A 21st Century Yoga Community

I went to see the yoga movie Enlighten Up! last week in downtown Manhattan. Recommended for anyone with a remote interest in yoga and especially if you want a quick snapshot as to how yoga is presenting itself in the USA today. Shot documentary style, it's upbeat and funny and well worth the money and time. The movie follows "Nick", a beginner yogi on his journey who sets out to "understand" yoga in its entirety. In particular, he is trying to make the link between yoga postures and yoga's claim to be a path to enlightenment. He is a journalist and wants hard evidence and has six months to get it! Starting in NYC, he fast becomes disillusioned with contorting yogis and then travels to LA where he gets even more confused! And then on to India only to find more and more variety and mixed messages. Eventually, Nick starts to emotionally unravel and the shedding of tears jerks him to realize that just maybe there is more...Finally, he meets a guru in India whose message is clear and simple - just be yourself and be relaxed! The depth of the gurus message stuns Nick into realizing that simplicity is key and that it's futile to put arbitrary time frame (six months in his case) on awakening. Still confused, though he does now realize that there is a lot more to yoga than meets the western eye! Right now the movie is only showing in the USA but for some clips and trailer, follow the link below. Enjoy! Neo

I saw this only last night, I really enjoyed it. At the end of it all, Yoga is an individual journey of embracing all that you are & were created to be. Recognizing that making a difference starts with you & then flows into our communities & the world. In the words of Mr. B.K.S Iyengar "The aim and culmination of yoga is the sight of the SOUL, but it has a lot of side effects which are health, happiness, peace and poise."

I am glad to hear you liked the film. From the trailer, it looked like it might be trashing yoga, but it sounds like it does deliver a nice yogic message.

If you can do headstand, it is easier to do the Lotus position there then sitting. 62 year old Narayani explains why and demonstrates how to do Urdhva Padmasana, Headstand in Lotus, also called inverted Lotus Position. It is a more advance Hatha Yoga Asana. You should know the basics of Yoga before trying. Even if you can't try, it is beautiful to watch. Recording in Yoga Vidya Ashram Meinberg. Looks like we are out of the depths of the dark Swedish winter and into the glory of sun-light!We have some great news to share...in August last year Isa and I had an amazing baby girl called Alaya! And last month we took over a yoga center in Stockholm. We have named the center Urban OM and our vision is to create a 'place' for yoga, self-inquiry and meditation. A place where you can experience inner being in the midst…See More

Pincha Mayurasana is a variation of the peacock. Pincha means tail feather. It is also a variation of Vrikshasana, the scorpion. At the end you hear a dog barking - this is Ricky, the dog of Shivakami, co-director of Yoga Vidya Ashram. This Asana is demonstrated by Narayani, a 62 year old Yoga teacher and Master.
